Pick of the Week
The Substance
The filmmaker's daring satire addresses the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the perceived horrors of advancing years. Presence Film
Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries in this nifty supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears sensing the poltergeist, and the entity appears defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of disappearances has made the children frightened. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he anticipates the worst. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, nighttime, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who states early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about profiting from the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though the lead actress manages to depict the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4
The Spy Mystery
This week's additional entry by the same director is a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a double agent among the team from a group of five – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors excel of deadpan cool, so a delicious psychological game of truth or lie develops. The supporting cast join in the intelligent intelligence fun.
