Colombia's President Declares 'I Would Resort to Weapons Once More' should United States Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump and his Colombian counterpart have intensified the rhetoric in their verbal conflict, heightening strains bilaterally following US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs cocaine mills and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Escalating Tensions and Claims

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the US president threatened comparable armed intervention against Bogotá, claiming the country is “very sick too” and “run by a sick man involved in producing the drug and distributing it to America."

Although Colombia is the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is personally connected to the trade.

A Frayed Alliance

Colombia was historically a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign against drug trafficking and enjoyed cross-party backing in Washington, but relations have worsened significantly after Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s drug trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions like one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom laid down arms subsequent to a landmark accord.

Petro's Defiant Rebuttal

When asked whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle decades ago, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader nor am I a drug trafficker," he stated.

"Trump speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a message.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And should they arrest me, which many of the country loves and respects, they will provoke the powerful force of the nation," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed a period in his early life as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed that he never participated in combat. After demobilizing, he participated in creating the constitutional rewrite in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the capital city before winning the presidency.

"I pledged to abstain from using arms again ... but for Colombia I shall resume the fight," he vowed.

Increased Security along with Broad Rejection

The Colombian defence minister reported that the national leader's protection team was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with the US president, but voices spanning Colombian politics have rejected the notion of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Political and Financial Strains

Washington withdrew the president's entry visa subsequent to he called on US troops to refuse orders that violate law. Later, in October, authorities imposed asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and various close collaborators.

At the same time the US was building up its forces in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted attacks on boats in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
